Quick Steps for Adding a WordPress Image Caption
Ever noticed how images you see online often have some sort of text, usually in small print, written underneath them? That text is called a caption, and its purpose is to provide additional information about the image. Captions are also useful for SEO purposes, because we tend to scan articles before reading and captions are among the things where we tend to focus our gaze upon.
Of course, not all images have captions, nor should they, but for the situations when adding some detail about a picture seems like a useful thing to do, we thought it would be a good idea to show you just how to add them in your WordPress website.
But, before you get to work on this, we recommend you to quickly edit the images in WordPress, and prepare them to shine on your website.
Adding Captions When Uploading New Images
- Upload images to your media library: Go to Media > Add new
The first step in this process is to upload a picture to the WordPress website using the Media Library. Head over to your admin area and navigate to Media, located in the menu on your left-hand side. From there, click on Add New.
- Drag and drop files or select them from your folder
Here, you can either drag and drop the files you want to use, or you can select them from your folder by clicking on Select Files.
- Once your files are uploaded, click on Edit
- Add title, alt text, description and captions
This will open your Image Editor in a new tab. Here you can add your image title, alternative text, and description (which will not visible on your website), as well as the captions which your visitors will see.
- Click on Update
Once you’ve entered all the necessary information about your picture, you can go ahead and click on the Update button at the top right to save your changes.
Adding captions to Existing Images
- Go to Media -> Library
To modify the images you already use on your website by adding captions, go to Media and click on Library.
- Enter Attachment Details
Click on the image you want to add the caption to. This will open the boxes where you can type in your image title, caption, alt text and description.
- Wait until your changes are saved.
Once you’ve added your text, wait until it says Saved in the top right corner.
- Exit the item and add it to your website.
After your changes have been saved, you can safely exit the item and add it anywhere you want on your website.
Go to your live website and check if the caption is now visible below the photo you added it to.
That’s basically all it takes to successfully add captions to your images. As you can see, you can choose whether you need captions or not when uploading the picture, and you can go back and add captions to the pictures you’re already using on your website. The decision is all yours, now that you know how to do it.
